Chapter 6

There was no escape. She would have to play the part. Her role was to act as the phenomenal new stylist Cox had hired for this event. It would be a Herculean feat knowing what she did.

Hannah held her breath. The jar of men’s sculpting gel quaked in her hands until she finally dropped it. It rolled across the floor of an office room in the Bradninch Town Council building.

David’s heel came down on it and stopped it in its tracks.

“What’s this? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” He tilted his head to the side, smiling pleasantly.

Hannah swallowed. It was hard to believe he was trying to play her. There was no way around it now. He was guilty until proven innocent as far as she was concerned. She couldn’t afford to let her guard down. Even though he was the glittering diamond in the crown of Modern performing arts. The apex of her every aspiration.

“This is big. That’s all it is. It’s just…big….” She tugged her turtle neck’s collar.

“Mm, yes. Yes, show business can swallow you whole. It’s cavernous, really. Equally full of treasures as it is the cavity of all moral decline.” His eyes glittered. She saw something both sinister and seductive in his expression.

“If you like this gig, then there could be plenty more where it came from. I could introduce you to a world many people believe only exists in fairytales.”

Hannah giggled and tilted her head to the side.

“I learned the hard way, Mr. Cox. There are no such thing as fairylands.”

David nodded and drew dangerously close. He leaned over her and she backed against the styling booth. He bowed her backward like a ballroom dancer. Her eyes crossed looking up his nose’s philtrum. What was the reason for this?

“Maybe you’ve been too disillusioned. Your mother died a terrible death, poisoned by her own addictions to alcohol and morphine. It can be a dangerous gamble. This life, I mean. But if we never venture we never gain. I’m offering you a share in the entire world. Don’t be so quick to turn me down.”

He leaned back up again. Her heart was racing. She didn’t understand how she could be so terrified and so intoxicated at the same time. He was a serpent. Expert at an enjoyable deception.

“I am captivated by you, Hannah. Your charms. The mystery that surrounds your family. I confess. I’ve been delving a wee bit into your family secrets. It’s all been about you. When I first saw you walking across the spring lawns here in Exeter. I knew I had to meet you. That you could be the jewel to the crown of yet another sensation that flies from my pen. Your great-grandmother. The secrets you house. The burden that’s been placed on your young shoulders. You have the power to enchant the UK and the world with the amazing happenstance of your daily life.”

Hannah swallowed.

“I like to weigh the odds before I take my chances, sir.” Her voice echoed against the ancient walls.
